Meet Alex
Alex presesnts the Xfm Breakfast Show every weekday morning from 06:00-10:00.
Alex's Biography
What were you up to before Xfm?
“When I joined Xfm I was doing stand up comedy round London and presenting a Sunday morning TV show. Before comedy I’d been a singer in a band up in Leeds. I did that for about a year and we were really bad, we never practiced, the guitarist could only play if he was sitting down on stage and we never had a permanent drummer.
"I started to enjoy talking between the songs more than singing them so the comedy and everything else came from there. Someone told me the band are still going but the guitarist can stand and play now.”
What was the first record you bought?
“It was The Bangles’ ‘Walk Like An Egyptian.’ I was 7; if I'd been older I think I might have bought it because I fancied The Bangles but as it was I just wanted to 'Walk like an Egyptian'. I'd walk to school like an Egyptian, to the shops like an Egyptian, I walked everywhere like an Egyptian. It was a great first buy, sadly followed up by the theme to ‘Fraggle Rock.’
What was the first gig you went to?
“I was 14 and it was the Smashing Pumpkins at the Town and Country Club in Leeds, it was just after they’d released Siamese Dream and they were awesome, as well as that The Verve were in support and some girl who must have thought I was older than 14 kept buying me beer. It was one of those nights. The Leeds T&C has since closed down and been turned into an Australian theme pub. Travesty.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to do what you do?
“There’s no one way to get there but what I would say is get as much experience as possible and take everything you can from every chance you get. My first radio job was on a college station called Wired FM in South London.
Before I started I thought it was going to be like the film, ‘Empire Records’ with trendy people rollerblading round the studio. It was actually a small hut with no toilet so everyone used to go round the back but I learnt loads there. Enjoy every step of the journey because most are fun in some way and wear hats sometimes, for variety.”
