David Baddiel says the upcoming Christmassy version of Three Lions will have updated lyrics that reference the Lionesses' Euro 2022 victory.

The comedian - who featured on the original version of the song alongside The Lightning Seeds' Ian Broudie and his comedy partner Frank Skinner - told Radio X's Toby Tarrant: "Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds - definitely a genius - he came to me and Frank and said, ‘Shall we do it with Christmas because it's December, the World Cup’s in December, shall we do it, redone with lots of sleigh bells and kids choirs and that?’

"And me and Frank said ‘Let's rewrite it with some Christmassy lyrics and some comedy’. They’re pretty comedy Christmasy lyrics. And also we thought we'd write about the Lionesses winning, so update it a bit and that’s what we’ve done."

Teasing details about the song's accompanying new video, he added: "We filmed the video the other day, which was what we’d done - I don't want to give too much away - but it was basically the first video we ever shot in 1996, it's a version of that, but just with us much, much older."

It's not the first time the Lionesses have been mentioned in relation to the updated version of the 1996 anthem.

Recently, Ian Broudie of the Lightning Seeds revealed to Radio X that as well as the upcoming World Cup, the Lionesses' victory against Germany and their subsequent celebrations really inspired him to make another version of the football track.

He told Chris Moyles: "When the Lionesses won and it was so lovely to see them and they ran into the press conference and sang Three Lions on the tables and dancing, that was the moment we thought, 'It would be really cool to do this.'"
