The Battle Of The Chavs Commences

Libertine Carl Barat’s new supergroup The Chavs (featuring The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess, Primal Scream’s Martin Duffy and Razorlight’s Andy Burrows) has come under fire as another band has surfaced saying they laid claim to the name two years ago.
After Barat explained his intentions to disband The Libertines, there has been much discussion as to what the singer would do next. However on December 14, Barat along with
Charlatans singer Tim Burgess, Primal Scream keyboardist Martin Duffy and Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows played a gig at the Tap And Tin in Chatham.
However another band, also called The Chavs have made a statement that they were formed in 2003 and are now taking legal advice regarding the copying of their name.
Speaking to Xfm singer Tom Urzi explained that he read about Barat giving an interview with Essex newspaper The Evening Gazette claiming that his outfit were planning on recording a double album and releasing it in 2005, and decided to try and stop them from using their name.
The original Chavs will have to legally “prove prior use” of the name to stop Barat’s outfit from using it, as they claim fans may be fooled into buying music or gig tickets for the wrong act, as Urzi explains “They’re peddlers of naff indie and we’re purveyors of quality rock.”
Urzi went on to say that he’d like to stage a battle of the bands contest somewhere like Shepard’s Bush Empire to let fans see which band was the best ansd deserved to keep the name.
The Chavs (Urzi, Linda Angel, Paul Waterson, Michael Giaquinto, Steve Forster, Graham Carr and the charmingly named Arsepiece) formed in 2003, and have already released their debut album ‘Angry Sex’ on the band’s label Maniac Squat Ltd [more].
