Flaming Lips New Album Named At Last

added 27 September 2004 at 11.51

After months locked in the studios it seems the new Flaming Lips album is nearly complete and according to Lips frontman Wayne Coyne, the follow up to 2002’s ‘Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots’ has "A more organic feel."

The band have been recording the new record at producer Dave Fridmann's Tarbox Studios (which recently played host to The Vines and The Strokes), near the Canadian border, North West New York. The new record also has a working title of ‘At War with the Mystics’ and has a tentative mid-2005 release date pencilled in.

In a new interview Coyne has also explained that the record is sonically less electronic than ‘Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots’, but then went on to give a baffling description of the new sound.

"We've moved away from robot sounds to sounds that are made by robots that come off organic," Coyne explained to Blender magazine, "It's getting into a space-age jazz element." Before calling it "a sort of progressive Dixieland" that’s "hopefully not too far out of the realm of what's listenable" while maintaining the Lips traditional "element of psychiatric injury."

New songs expected to appear in the record include 'Space Bible' and 'Mr. Ambulance Driver'.

“It's about a guy and a gal,” Coyne of the latter song, “And the gal is dying after a car accident and it's the moment they share as the ambulance approaches."

The band are currently putting the finishing touches to the album, but have confirmed live appearances at the US All Tomorrow's Parties festival in Long Beach, California on November 6 alongside Lou Reed, The Shins, The Walkmen and Sufjan Stevens.

They've also conrtibuted the new track 'SpongeBob & Patrick Confront The Psychic Wall of Energy' for the soundtrack album for the upcoming 'Spongebob Squarepants Movie'.
