Doherty TV Doc Aired Next Week

added 12 May 2005 at 10.29

The controversial documentary which shows Pete Doherty smoking heroin while still with The Libertines will be aired on UK terrestrial television next week as part of the programme, ‘Stalking Pete Doherty’.

The documentary made by part-time lecturer and film-maker Max Carlish will be aired at 10pm on Channel 4 on May 17 despite attempts by Doherty to block the airing.

“When part-time academic and occasional filmmaker Max Carlish chose ex-Libertine Pete Doherty, The UK's most famous heroin addict, as the subject of his comeback TV documentary," a Channel 4 statement explains. "It was set to end in tears - and worse. The result is this cautionary tale about a filmmaker who blurred the line between filmmaker and fan.”

A Channel 4 spokesman confirmed that the film traces Carlish’s life from his initial idea to make the documentary all the way up to present day, a film about the making of a film, a smack-u-mentary if you will. Exposing the eccentricities of both men, Carlish’s commentary of events is interspersed with footage of Doherty.

As previously reported, the Babyshambles frontman was filmed smoking heroin and stills of the footage were sold to the Sunday tabloids. This led to an altercation in a London hotel and Pete Doherty’s subsequent arrest.

In other Babyshambles news, the band’s debut is reported to be nearing completion. Currently in the final week of recording, the band are putting the finishing touches to 30 tracks before they select which will make the final cut.

In a recent interview, new drummer Adam Ficek denied tabloid rumours of studio tensions, confirmed the band have been writing new songs to add the to their back catalogue and also spoke about how Doherty’s curfew affected the studio sessions.

“It was a really hard thing to take in when [Pete’s] charges were dropped,” Ficek told NME. “Pete didn’t take it in for a few days and then he started to realise ‘I can do whatever I want’. It alleviated that problem of the curfew so from a creative point of view you could sense a difference.”

While rumoured for release for some time, live favourite ‘Fuck Forever’ has been earmarked to follow ‘Killamangiro’ as the band’s next single and likely to be released in July.
