The 20 Question Quick-Fire For... Martin Bate

1. What would you say is your defining characteristic?
"I think most people would say my passion for music - but I sincerely hope there's more to me than that..."

2. What is your idea of happiness?
"Chilling out, peace and quiet - except for the stereo blasting out!"

3. What is your idea of hell?
"An evening in a 'showbar' with endless cheesy-house versions of classic songs and too many people spoiling for a fight."

4. What is your biggest flaw?
"I don't suffer fools gladly - but maybe that's a strength..."

5. What fault in others are you most tolerant of?
"Being a pain in the arse when they're drunk. Hey, we've all been there."

6. What was your worst ever job?
"Temporary office junior... my sole duties were answering phones and licking stamps for two weeks. I felt I could have at least graduated onto photocopying by the end of the fortnight."

7. Where would you most like to live?
"New York or Sydney. But since I'm still here I guess I must be pretty happy with Glasgow."

8. Who in musical history do you most dislike?
"Pete Waterman - the last 20 years of faceless, bland pop-pap and TV talent shows is entirely down to him, where once British Pop Music meant Duran Duran, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Adam and the Ants, Wham, Culture Club and Madness."

9. Which characters in musical history would you most like to be?
"Being David Lee Roth from Van Halen always looked like fun."

10. What's your favourite album ever?
"American Music Club 'Mercury' or Smart Went Crazy 'Con Art'. And yes, I know you're looking at me now like I wake up in the morning with my anorak on, but trust me.  If you like indie-rock try either of those albums. They're not difficult or weird, they're just real hidden gems!"

11. What was the first single you bought? (Be honest!)
"I bought Jonah Lewie 'Stop the Cavalry' and Queen 'Flash Gordon' on the same day. I can still remember it well - although obviously not which one got rang through the till first..."

12. ...And you first gig?
"Anthrax at the Glasgow Barrowlands (which admittedly is pretty f*cking cool). This was in the days before over-14's gigs, everything was over-18's. I was only 16 and I was so nervous I wasn't going to get in after looking forward to it for months."

13. Your favourite qualities in a band/musician:
"Honesty and passion."

14. Who's your favourite author?
"Haruki Murakami. Wow, I'm really starting to get self-conscious about this big bulky anorak..."

15. Who's your favourite film director?
"David Lynch."

16. What person (living or dead) do you most admire?
"Anyone who gives their life selflessly to helping others."

17. What's your favourite food and drink?
"I like trying new food I've never tried before (as long as it's veggie) and drinking 'exotic' beer. Although my definition of exotic is admittedly pretty much anything that's not Tennents."

18. What's your favourite restaurant?
"Vegetarian restaurant called Gobo in New York, or a dim-sum place called Ping Pong in Soho, London. In Scotland, probably Stravaigin in Glasgow's West End."

19. What three songs would you have played at your funeral?
"Wow, err, let's start with the Sid Vicious version of 'My Way' to put a smile on everyone's face, Johnny Cash's version of 'Danny Boy' for personal, sentimental reasons.  And I suppose I better chuck in something religious like 'Abide With Me' just in case..."

20. What's your motto?
"Just try and have fun and don't kill anyone..." and "Avoid questionnaires at all costs".
