The Vaccines Win The Xfm New Music Award 2012

You chose the ten Best British Debut Albums of 2011. Our panel of music industry experts has whittled it down to one....
The winner of the Xfm New Music Award 2012 has been decided… and the award goes to The Vaccines for their album What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?
The album was picked from a shortlist of ten by a panel of judges featuring Dom Howard and Chris Wolstenholme from Muse, Tom Smith from Editors, Craig Potter from Elbow, Peter Hook from Joy Division/New Order, Tim Burgess of The Charlatans, Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody, Charlie Fink from Noah And The Whale, plus Xfm's John Kennedy, Clint Boon, Mary Anne Hobbs, Danny Wallace and Gordon Smart. Also joining the panel were legendary producer John Leckie, Sarah Walters of the Manchester Evening News, Tim Ingham from Music Week, David Morgendorff from MTV and John Hirst of HMV.
The judges praised the record as being a "straight out of the block, perfectly formed debut", clocking in at just under half an hour.
Gordon Smart of The Sun and Xfm's Sunday afternoon show, said: "The Vaccines stormed it. They sparked the biggest response amongst the judges on the night and the most lively discussion. The panel gave the contenders a fair trial, at the expense of personal relationships. In honour of the winners, they are all now indulging in some post break-up sex…"
Xfm's John Kennedy added: "It's an excellent result for a band who have really connected with people by tapping into the essence of rock'n'roll."
John Leckie commented: " It's fresh and up and got character. Good running order of tracks and feels like a great gig. It defines the terms of what a debut album should be."
The ten shortlisted acts were:
Beady Eye - Different Gear, Still Speeding
James Blake - James Blake
Chapel Club - Palace
Benjamin Francis Leftwich - Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm
Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds
Ben Howard - Every Kingdom
Miles Kane - Colour Of The Trap
Ed Sheeran - +
Scroobius Pip - Distraction Pieces
