After winning Xfm's New Music Award for the Best British Debut Album of 2011 the band have been speaking to Xfm about the future...

Following the announcement last night that The Vaccines are the winners of Xfm's New Music Award for their debut What Did You Expect From The Vaccines, Xfm's John Kennedy got lead singer Justin on the phone.

After a few communication issues getting through to the band's hotel in Singapore a very sleepy frontman spoke to Xfm to express their pleasure at recieiving the acolade.

Previous winners include The xx, Glasvegas and Stornoway.

This year's expert panel picked to whittle down your shortlist from ten to one included Tom from Editors, Charlie from Noah and the Whale, Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol), Dom from Muse, Craig from Elbow, Peter Hook, Tim Burgess and legendary producer John Leckie.

He also told John the follow up is in the works - and should be out in the Autumn.

"We've pretty much got the next record finished now interms of writing and it definitely feels like they are along the same lines. All the qualities that were in the first record are in this batch of songs but hopefully they've grown a bit and they breathe a bit more and we've come along as players," he explained.

"It's the next chapter really."

The band have become known for their upbeat fast paced songs which rarely go over three minutes. Justin reckons the next record will be similar and is critical of bands who claim that they are 're-inventing' themselves for future releases.

"Ultimately it doesn't matter how hard you try to do something - as a songwriter, as a musician - I think you are always innately inclined to play a certain way, to write a certain way"

The band are returning to the studio in March almost exacty a year after the debut album was released.

Fans can already get a taste of the new material as two tracks - No Hope and Teenage Icon - are both now on the band's set lists and "look like" they'll both be on the record.
