The Vaccines: "The BRITs Are Weird"

The Xfm New Music Award winners claim it's good to be loved by the mainstream...

Well, they may not have walked off with a BRIT Award last night, but The Vaccines can comfort themselves with their recent receipt of the Xfm New Music Award for 2012, having been voted as the makers of the Best British Debut Album of the past year.

In fact, singer Justin Young told Xfm: "The BRITs are weird. It gets weirder every time. We arrived in between Adele and Lana Del Rey, then we were ushered very quickly off the red carpet. But it's nice to be here. We're happy just to come and celebrity spot have some free food and free drink.

"It's good for us to be recognised by what is quite essentially a mainstream event. We're an ambitious band and we want to take it to the mainstream. It feels like a good pat on the back."

And what about some new material? "We're going in to make the new record in the next couple of weeks," says Justin. "It's pretty much written. We've got a few dates in May where we'll be road testing the new record then. All you can really do is focus on what you're good at and I think we're quite good at making simple, catchy rock and roll songs."
