Shaun Ryder: Writing Songs Is For Young People

Happy Mondays

The Happy Mondays frontman's told Xfm their not planning on writing new stuff as part of the reunion....

The band confirmed to Xfm's Gordon Smart on Sunday that the rumours were true - the original line-up are back together and heading on tour in May.

It's the first time in 19 years that Bez, Gary Whelan, Mark Day, Paul Davies, Paul Ryder, Rowetta and Shaun Ryder have all performed together, embarking on an 11 date UK tour in May including a massive show at Manchester Arena.

Updating Xfm following the announcement lead singer Shaun said that Bez was the only one who was unsure about getting back together.

"The only person who I had reservations about doing it was Bez. Although Bez is as fit and as handy as any 19 year old kid, he was the only one I was a bit unsure of. With a little bit of friendly persuasion, he came out of retirement."

Shaun and his brother - and bandmate - Paul have been restrained for 11 year but apparently that wasn't much of an obstacle.

"Me and our Paul haven't spoken since 1999! We forgot what we weren't speaking about!" Shaun explained. "Even though we've not been speaking, we met up and nodded at funerals, that kind of thing."

But on the subject of new music Shaun confirmed to us that the band have no plans to record new material, he was emphatic as he responded "who's to say there won't be another [album] but there's NO plans for that."

"Pop songs - or whatever you want to call them - are written by young people and when you're young those songs are easy to write," he explained. "If you look at any great artist once they ggo past late 30s... the songs... they just aren't there."
