This Week's Videos; Feeder, Raging Speedhorn & More

Feeder pay a curious tribute to the late Jon Lee in ‘Come Back Around’, Raging Speedhorn go all Iron Maiden for ‘Fuck The Voodoo Man’, Ladytron‘s ‘Seventeen’ is the anti-Britney and Jetplane Landing get lo-fi.
A sobering promo initially; Grant and Taka are doing their sepia-tinged thing in a desolate warehouse – the absence of late drummer Jon Lee is almost palpable. Then we pan out to reveal a vaguly urban fashion model determinedly pounding away at a drumkit. Then another. And another and another. Until the guitar-thrashing duo are surrounded by gorgeous women pounding away at snares, tom-toms and high hats. A tribute then, of sorts.

In a departure from the ‘Horn’s usual urban hardcore stylings, ‘Fuck The Voodoo Man’ opens with two spooky little girls playing with a crystal. Raging Speedhorn are inside the crystal, thrashing through the track with their usual ferocity while the girls exhibit increasingly bizarre telekinetic powers. Eventually the band are assaulted and strangled by their own cables while the girls stare impassively into the crystal. The sort of gig Stephen King would enjoy.

Not so much the opposite of Britney’s ‘Hit Me Baby (One More Time)’ video as what would happen if you tried to recreate it at a secondary modern in Kettering. A dozen – plain and plainly-dressed schoolgirls are herded into a grim looking room where they dance nervously in front of a two-way mirror. Ladytron, of course, are staring impassively from the other side. One by one the girls are taken out of the room by an intimidating schoolmarm until only one is left. Odd.

Maybe Jetplane Landing really are this skint, or maybe they just wanted to relive their struggling early days. In any case, any sixth-form music student who’s leapt around the common room while a mate films them with a Dixons camcorder will be on familiar ground here – the four of them hurl themselves around their small rehearsal space like they’re raging against the dying of the free period. Out of tune upright piano just out of shot.
