What Did You Make Of Jay-Z's Glastonbury Performance?

added 30 June 2008 at 16.53

It was the most controversial festival booking of the year and now that Jay-Z has played his Glastonbury set we want to know what you made of it.

Saturday night. The Pyramid Stage. Glastonbury Festival. Jay-Z takes to the stage.

After all the hooplah we've got just one question. What did you make of Jay-Z's headline slot?

  1. I like many was disapointed when Jay-Z got the headline slot. Not my thing, I am a white middle class middle aged guy so how am I going to relate to Jay-Z's music. Listened to a few tracks and videos on the internet and still didn't get it. But as Esther points out I trust Michael and Emily to get it right so I went along and even got much closer to the front than normal. If Jay-Z had to win the audience over he took about 10 seconds. He produced a performance that was epic, the music, the sound, the pace, the visuals, the powerful stage presence, the humour and the relationship with the crowd. Truly unforgetable, truly brilliant.

To those who have never been to Glasto, you are not even seeing a small part of a faint shadow of what is a truly unique and moving experience on TV. It is far more than a few headline acts on a couple of stages. Go and you will see why the line up, the mud, the toilets don't matter that much. Sorry, rambling, an age thing you know and a consequence of Glasto, gets into the blood.

  2. Guy Garvey from Elbow hit the nail on the head when he said the Eavis' have been putting on the best party in the UK from many decades now and we should trust them to know what they were doing. I wasn't disappointed at all. Glastonbury isn't just about white boys in skinny jeans playing guitars - it's much, much more than that.

  3. What a bloody awful line up. After all the hype at the build up to this once great festival I think there is some agenda to wipe a whole genre of music off the map. I wasn't there as I only buy tickets to see bands that I like and could not afford to blindly buy tickets before a line up is announced, but watched the TV coverage every day hoping to see some good stuff {not that there was much on offer } and what was shown ? - Joan Armatrading,Eddy Grant,Buddy Guy,Will Young,Duffy,Amy Winehouse,Neil Diamond.... these artists may be good in their own right but is this the Glastonbury I was tuning in for ? It seems that people are so desperate to hear live music that they will accept anything as every set was met with rapturous applause. As for the rap stuff, again not my taste I realise that, but there really was far too much of it. How boring. Oh, before I forget I must call the BBC and ask why they didn't show Shakin Stevens' set !! That must have gone down a storm !! Peace.

  4. The opening was brilliant and really got the crowd going. His performance was pretty flawless, but if you are not really into hip hop then it became pretty boring after about five songs and people started to leave. Only waited to see who his 'special guest' was in hope that it was Lincoln Park , I would have screamed if it had been Beyonce in the end.

  5. The beginning was the best bit, miming Oasis - say no more!
