'Emo Suicide' Row Continues - Have Your Say

added 27 May 2008 at 17.48

Since the tragic suicide of 13 year old Hannah Bond, and the subsequent blame laid at emo band My Chemical Romances' door, music fans have been reacting strongly to the issue. Have your say here.

With My Chemical Romance and the 'emo' genre being blamed - not only by the coroner dealing with young Hannah Bond's suicide but The Daily Mail as well - fans of the band and fellow musicians have been reacting strongly to the accusations.

Elbow, Kate Nash and Pigeon Detectives are just a few of the bands who have been speaking to Xfm in support of My Chemical Romance, and users comments describe how "furious" they are and that "music is a freedon of expression and helps others through difficult emotions".

Others Xfm users have commented that "you have [My Chemical Romance frontman] Gerard Way telling the children his music is aimed towards "And wouldn't it be great if we were dead?"...music does have something to do with it in my opinion."

My Chemical Romance have now themselves reacted, posting a message to the world on their myspace page declaring themselves a positive life influence in young people's lives.

With a massive march planned in London this Saturday (May 31) we want to know what you, the music fans, think about the issue.

Leave your comments below, fill in our online poll and make sure your voice is heard. Or, if you're at this weekend's march - email your comments and pictures to online@xfm.co.uk.

  1. i was fuming when i read this story in kerrang mag.
(Everyone forgot to tell me about it for a reason)
Just about all my friends and me are 'emo', and some arnt but because of people in our class we take to it, even thouogh we didnt start out that way.
MCR are not to blame for this, they are a tight band who work their butts off to make great music, i've knwn them for 3 years now(im only 14) and they just get better, and their words tell a story, so next time you read goldilocks and the three bears or summin dont wonder off into a wood and eat some random food 'cuz someone else wrote about it (or sung),make up your own mind, enjoy the story and follow your own rules and trends.
Hanna killed herself because she was not right in the head.
YOU ONLY GOT ONE LIFE! LIVE IT!
BE INDIVIDUAL! YOUR THE ONLY YOU IN THE WORLD!

  2. I think that this girl just wanted to fit in with all of the other emo's by cutting her wrists, people seem to think that you are only emo if you cut yourself. But then what about people with Mental Disorders..? i really highly doubt that this girl had any bad problems that could only be resolved by suicide, i mean come on, how bad can a 13 year olds problems be..?
i think it was a cry for attention, hoping that her paernts would walk in at the right time, but she accidently slipped. Yeah, i know, i'm a bitch.

  4. emo is not about self harm or hanging yourself. as an emo, i can say most seriously, that emo is about, being you. we express ourselves. yes, we dye our hair black and put every color of the rainbow in it. the boys wear tight pants and shirts. the girls wear the same thing. we are artistic, quiet, poetic, and most of all unique. we dont want to assimilate into what society wants us to be. i am 18 and have been emo since i was 13 years old. death is a part of life and emos acknoweledge that, but we dont encourage people to go kill themselves. i do not believe in god, i do believe in life after death though but that is not courtosey of my chemical romance. they are an amazing band. i love them. their single, Welcome to the Black Parade, is about a cancer patients of which is dying and believes he is going to a place called the black parade which is a parade where the deseased go. Big deal. in the beginning, i did cut myself because i thought it cane with the style. but then my emo music helped me stop. My chemical romance is showing kids that life is to be valued. they are not to blame for some girl commiting suicide. she had free will and she chose the easy way out. suicide is a perminate fix for a temporary problem. its not musics fault for her death, its not my chem's fault either. emo is meaning you are in-touch with yourself and are accepting of who you are. not an obsession with death and suicide. that is just crazy.

  6. Its stupid to blame a genre of music or a band for something like this. She probably had other problems. In my chemical romance's yrics it states 'Im not afraid to keep on living' how could that be responsible for what happened.Gangsta rap talks about killing people and gangs and they dont get accused for anything.Gerard-Stay aive. How coud this make people self-harm ????

  8. to blame music for the death of this girl is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. i am a huge fan of my chemical romance & so that automatically means i inflict harm on myself? i do have friends who have cut their wrists in the past but my chemical romance has helped them stop through the music they make in the out look they have on life. this is a band that has set out from the very beginning to save lives,& to make a positive influence on their listeners. just because you don't understand that does not mean that you can blame them for every teenage suicide victim. if anyone would have done some creditable research before all of this they would have realised how hard mcr works to help people & how many lifes they have SAVED. they have made the most insperational music i have ever heard & through everything i have been through the music was there for me when no one else was. it made me feel like somone actually understands. mcr saved my life. & i in no way believe that it ended Hannah's.

  9. what don't believe me about the letter here I have it for you:

We have recently learned of the suicide and tragic loss of Hannah Bond. We'd like to send our condolences to her family during this time of mourning. Our hearts and thoughts are with them.

My Chemical Romance are and always have been vocally anti-violence and anti-suicide. As a band, we have always made it one of our missions through our actions to provide comfort, support, and solace to our fans. The message and theme of our album "The Black Parade" is hope and courage. Our lyrics are about finding the strength to keep living through pain and hard times. The last song on our album states: "I am not afraid to keep on living" - a sentiment that embodies the band's position on hardships we all face as human beings. If you or anyone that you know have feelings of depression or suicide, we urge you to find your way and your voice to deal with these feelings positively.

  10. wow...what is up with ya.I'm sick of hearing people using emo for discribing their kids.Or even kids discribing themselves as emo.My best friend in the whole world is classified as a prep but she cuts and she listens to "sopose it(sp)"depressing music from time to time.Is she an emo....NO.The media is treating this like its new? This happen almost a year ago but its making headlines now?Seens the begining of time people have killed themself but only 3 to 5 percent of suicide get on the news and less then 1 percent gets put on blast like this.
Did music have a play in this?Let me answer that one.....I say HELL TO THE NO.I am a fateful lisener of My Chem. They are not an emo band first of all and second the emo "movement" hurt their success in the first place.Look on their website they wrote a letter sending there condulnece(sp) to the family and urge people that if they feel depressed and/or suicideal to get help imedeatly(sp).Do you believe that they want people to commite suicide?Let alone one of their fans? The lead singer Gerard Way likes to get to know his fans and treats them like one of his friends. One time he was giving an interview and he said that he saw a girl with brutal lasurations(sp)(cuts or mutalation marks)on her forearms at a My Chemical Romance concert. He felt so responsiable and guilty. He asked himself"Did I cause her to do this to herself?"I don't know but likely no because they would never promote such a thing.Gerard struggeled with depression and contemplation of suicide. His brother Micheal Way(better known as Mikey Way)struggels with a condition that closely resembels bipolar disorder.During the making of their 3 album (the black parade) Micheal brokedown many times crying and talked about killing himself or quiting the band. The other members of the band wittnessed this.If you wittnessed this would you like to have others go through the same thing you still or used to go through. No,right the same goes for this band.Under the band cover up(not really a cover up but i can't think of the word at this moment)they are normal people like you and I that go through the same issues that some of us may or may not go through.
Hannah Bond...was a tragic lost but I believe we are giving her the ultimite satifaction don't you think? We are giving her fame for what our socity(sp)looks down upon. She had an undiagnosed mental illness. But her parents didn't look at the warning signs. In my opinion they were bad parents. They didn't take the words "I feel like killing myself"seriously,my mom would had smacked me up side my head and sat me in the living room to talk to me.Not say"Don't be so silly we'll talk about it in the morning"
Hannah in my own opinion cracked under her own pressure.she was discribed as "pretty, popular, and a great student"name someone who is that and later on not break down little by little either publicly or privetly(sp). You can't name someone right? So people think before you speak and/or type.
