U2 Cancel Glastonbury

Bono's back problem also shelves a stack of US shows.
U2 have had to cancel their headlining Glastonbury slot because of Bono's recent injury. The frontman damaged his back during rehearsals for the band's forthcoming US dates and following emergency surgery, the singer has been advised to pull out of playing the festival on June 25.
"I'm heartbroken," Bono explained in a statement after he was released from hospital in Munich today (May 25). "We really wanted to be there to do something really special - we even wrote a song especially for the festival."
The star phoned festival organiser Michael Eavis with the news this morning. "It was obvious from our telephone conversation that U2 are hugely disappointed," said Eavis. "Clearly, they were looking forward to playing the Pyramid Stage as much as we were looking forward to watching them. At this point, we have no comment to make about possible replacements for U2's Friday night slot. Instead, we would simply like to send Bono our very best wishes for a full and speedy recovery."
Meanwhile, 16 North American shows from the U2360 tour between June 3 and July 19 are to be rescheduled for 2011. "Our biggest and I believe best tour has been interrupted and we're all devastated," said manager Paul McGuiness. "For a performer who lives to be on stage, this is more than a blow."
