The Home Of Grunge Closes

Burch Vig’s Smart studios, home to records by Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth, closes its doors.
Smart Studios, the Wisconsin studio dubbed ‘The House Of Grunge’, is set to close on March 1. The studio was established by producers Butch Vig and Steve Marker almost twenty years ago.
Smart became synonymous with grunge after recording albums by Smashing Pumpkins, L7, Sonic Youth and famously demoing Nirvama’s landmark ‘Nevermind’ album. It was also Garbage’s HQ, Vig and Marker’s band project with Shirley Manson and Duke Erickson.
The studio is still holding master tapes by past clients and is now offering to return them to their rightful homes. Among those still storing recordings at the studio are U2, The Cult and Nine Inch Nails.
