The Beatle was shot in front of his wife Yoko Ono by Mark David Chapman - who is still in prison for the killing.
Millions around the world will remember him today.
There'll be a vigil in his home town of Liverpool and the day will also be marked in Srtawberry Fields in Central Park, New York.
In a statement - Yoko Ono said: "the world was lucky to have known him. We still learn so much from him today... "John, I love you!"
the organisation that collects royalties for music - PRS - has compiled a list of the most popular Lennon tracks with Imagine top of the list.
The track has had 12 million plays in five years.
