The Xfm New Music Award 2009

You picked the short-list, our panel of industry experts thought long and hard before deciding on the eventual winner - Glasvegas.
Glasvegas have scooped this year’s New Music Award, fighting off stiff competition from a formidable shortlist of ten. Despite the weather conditions making a formal get-together impossible, the judges submitted votes by e-mail and phone to crown Glasvegas and their peerless eponymous debut the winner.
Listen to Xfm London's Alex Zane announce the winner and interview Glasvegas singer James Allan.
The judges, who included Carl Barat, New Order’s Peter Hook and Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody had the following to say about the Glaswegian four piece’s tour de force:
Listen to Carl's interview about the winner.
"Dark as fuck but full of great lines. 'I will be the angel on your shoulder, my name is Geraldine I’m you’re social worker'. Good line but made great by his phrasing", Gary Lightbody.
“The dark reality of James Allan’s lyrics sung with his distinctive voice are what makes this such a powerful work. It sounds timeless but could only have been written and recorded now”, John Kennedy (Xfm).
“… For what it says lyrically about social issues in modern Britain… This album will be seen as a time capsule for generations of future listeners”, Chris Price (MTV)
“I haven’t been as excited about a new band coming through since The Libertines or Kasabian. They sound, look and behave in every way I want a rock band to… The best new band of the last year without question”, Gordon Smart (The Sun)
“Heading that big, dark sound set for stadiums that will dominate 2009”, Mat Horne.
“It's a first class debut album in that it is memorable, passionate and well formed. Every track is a winner, leaves you wanting more and wondering what will come next... I wish I’d produced it”, John Leckie
