The Flaming Lips: “Our Producer Is A Freak!”

Wayne Coyne reveals that long-time collaborator and producer Dave Fridmann is “an utter freak”.

Wayne Coyne, in the second part of our exclusive documentary, has revealed that long-time producer Dave Fridmann is a touch un-hinged. The man who manned the desk for groundbreaking albums like The Flaming Lips’ ‘The Soft Bulletin’ and Mercury Rev’s ‘Derserter’s Songs’, however, originally joined The Lips as a live sound engineer.

“He used to put lights around him and he wore nothing apart from a hospital smock”, said Wayne. “It would be open in the back and his butt would occasionally hang out. The audience would literally just watch him mix sometimes. And we thought ‘This is our kind of guy!’.

A like-minded attitude to music saw Fridmann make the switch to the producer’s chair where the madness continued.

“I like rock, I like loudness, I like intensity”, continued Wayne. “Without rock’s freak-out capacity, I wouldn’t be as drawn to it. Dave, for as normal as he comes across to some people, is very much like that… he’s an utter freak”.
