New Music Awards – Honourable Mentions

added 28 January 2009 at 14.28

We announced the ten band short-list on Monday. Want to know which band has the cheekiest fans? Or who almost scraped an inclusion? Read on…

You can call it the Parallel Universe New Music Awards if you like, but here’s where we celebrate the devious, herald the near-misses and generally thank you for your enormous contribution in making this year’s NMA’s the most closely fought ever. Here, ladies and gents, is a few extra awards that we’ve thrown in to celebrate your considerable voting prowess.

We stated very clearly in the rules that you were only allowed one vote. And that your first, second and third choices should be different bands. It wasn’t enough for some of you though. Oh no. We admire your commitment to the cause, but we thought we’d create an award for those who flouted our rules most spectacularly. Ladies and gentlemen, let us present:

Award For The Fanbase Who Most Spectacularly Flouted Our Rules
Winners: Fans of One Night Only.
You tried it all didn’t you? Multiple votes. ONO in position 1, 2 and 3, then 1 and 2, then 1 and 3. We removed all the duplicates, you added hours to our vote counting, but a doffed cap goes to your utter devotion to the cause.

The short-list, if we have to say so ourselves, is a pretty formidable collection of albums, by the very best artists who’ve emerged in 2008. Some newer bands, however, came tantalisingly close to making the ten. Two in particular almost made the cut and we’re betting that their strong showing will mean 2009 will be a massive year for them. In their honour we’ve created:

Good Showing In 2008, Eyes Down For A Massive 2009 Award
Winners: Swound and A Silent Film
Swound’s ‘Hello Future, Our Name is Swound!’ and A Silent Film’s ‘A City That Sleeps’, gave some of the bigger boys a good run for their money. John Kennedy’s a big fan and, by the avalanche of voting that came in, we’re betting the groundswell for both of these bands is well underway.

And finally, we were struck by the brilliant, imaginative names of our class of 2008. Wet Dog, Cats In Paris, Fuck Buttons… we salute you all. However, there can be only one:

Xfm’s What’s In A Name? Quite A Lot, Actually... Award
Winner: Nigel Of Bermondsey.
So simple, yet so effective. Nigel, you are a legend.

Don’t forget to tune in to the Breakfast Show on Tuesday, February 3rd to find out the (proper) New Music Award winner.
