Morrissey: 'Everyone In Music Is Boring'

added 12 February 2009 at 14.20

The Mancunian legend pops in to Xfm for a chat and says that the current musical climate leaves a lot to be desired.

Morrissey, in conversation with Xfm’s Ian Camfield, has said that the current crop of musicians are ‘boring’. The former Smiths’ frontman and erudite solo superstar had popped in for a half-hour long interview that’s set to be broadcast on Xfm tomorrow afternoon.

Talking about challenging artists in a challenging climate, Morrissey was of the opinion that the current crop of musicians didn’t quite measure up.

“I think everyone is quite boring in music”, he said. “I can’t see any voices who are taking the plunge and risking anything. They’re padding down the plank and everyone’s just lining up and accepting awards”.

Morrissey clearly wasn’t happy with this state of affairs.

“It’s very, very difficult for me and very distressing. I can’t see anyone who’s very individualistic. It’s unfortunate but most people are absolutely boring in music”.

So what do you think? Agree? Disagree? Let us know below…

  1. More aspiring artists need to alienate themselves and do creative drugs.

  2. I agree that most of pop music is boring. Lots of performers are just another cases of each other or somebody who they call "a leader" or a "somebody who's creating music".

I have so many wonderful ideas. You are about to hear me soon. You will love me and my music too. You won't be able to tell I'm boring.

    Promise.

  3. Admittedly, there are many bands who are just copying a tried and tested sound (usually incorporating at least one of the following bands: Arctic Monkeys, Razorlight, Libertines, Kooks) but there are also many many other artists who are creating exciting and interesting music (Bloc Party, Late of the Pier, Florence and the Machine etc.). It isn't possible to be totally 'unique' given the massive variety of different musical styles and sounds which already exist - one of the most well-known bands to realise this in recent times is Radiohead, who create mosaics from different styles rather than trying to create something original from scratch.

It frustrates me that there is so much middle of the road 'landfill' indie about ... however, it also frustrates me when someone makes such a dismissive comment about the state of music in general (even if it's someone we're all told to admire).

  4. There's some great stuff emerging in the music world... just a shame most of it is ignored by the mainstream media. But then again- isn't that what the mainstream media is for?

  5. Agreed. Morrissey's individual. And in America I think Why? (with Yoni Wolf) are individual. The rest follow a pattern.

  6. Morrissey does have a valid point. But he's wrong to dismiss ALL the current music scene as boring.Maybe he should retire from music and write his autobiography. That wouldn't be boring.

  7. Funny I would have said the same about him. He's right though. No soul in main stream music anymore. No real entertainers. Lots of great underground stuff going on though. Always has been always will be. Unfortunately in the 'industry' music is a second thought after branding and image... of course you will get McMusic with this approach.

  10. Hello,

My name is Mirek and I am a big fan. I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada.

I saw Morrissey play in the Twin Cities, Minnesoda in 1991, which is an 8 hour drive from Winnipeg.

I know that Morriessey is coming back to the USA.

Any chances of him coming to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

    Thanks
