Morrissey Contemplates Retirement

The former Smiths frontman says his chances of singing past 55 is ‘very slim’. Short shrift to ageing rockers follows…

Morrissey has spoken to Xfm about his retirement. In conversation with Ian Camfield, the former Smiths frontman and solo legend, said that he wasn’t planning on singing into his late 50s. Morrissey, of course, celebrates his fiftieth birthday with a homecoming show at the Manchester Apollo on May 22.

Talking about ageing rockers with Camfield, Morrissey saw very few who were still relevant.

“I assume most people lose it because they become satisfied and they achieve everything they ever set out to achieve”, he said. “More to the point, they become personally satisfied and that they’re quite happy and it doesn’t matter any more. It’s very interesting that it’s very hard to think of anybody who ages and still manages to mean anything

Asked whether he would continue singing as a 55 or 60 year old, Morrissey said, “I think it’s incredibly slim. For Heaven’s sake! Really?”

Morrissey will be interviewed all week by Steve Harris on Xfm. Catch him Monday-Thursday from 7pm. You can also listen again to Morrissey's half-hour interview with Ian Camfield.
