Xfm's Review Of 2008 - Part 4

October to December '08... What occurred? Oasis invaded Xfm, Guns N'Roses invaded the world and Xfm invaded London and Manchester with Winter Wonderland. Woot woot!
OCTOBER
Oasis Were Back! Back, I Tells Ya!
'Dig Out Your Soul' landed in a lot of houses and Noel Gallagher and Gem Archer landed in Xfm Towers to talk album talk. Some of the revelations included how the singing is dealt with in the Oasis camp, with regards to Liam's delivery. Liam: "I’m not a fucking pizza boy, mate." Indeed.

Dirty Pretty Things Split!
Nooooooooo! Another band hit the dust in '08 as Carl Barat and his merry men threw in the towel. Immediately, the grapevine was buzzing with rumours of a Libertines reunion, but this was all hogwash, according to Carl. Time will tell, though... time will tell.

Ringo: Officially The Grumpy One
In what must be the grumpiest communication to a fan club ever, former Fab Ringo Starr exorted his followers to quit sending him stuff to be signed. He just. Didn't. Have. The Time. The normally cheery ex-Mop Top claimed that any stuff that arrived after the cut off date would be binned. Peace and love, peace and love.

NOVEMBER
Guns N'Roses Return!
Satan skated to work. The ravens left the tower. Nostradamus turned in his grave. The biggest Second Coming since, well, 'The Second Coming' took place this month - 'Chinese Democracy' had landed. Yup, Guns N'Roses - or rather, Axl Rose and a cast of literally thousands presented one of the most over-the-top (and therefore brilliant) tracks of the year. This was all made even better when Axl's manager compared the album to the Sistine Chapel. But of course!

Paul McCartney Visited Xfm
In one corner... a TV personality, broadcaster and celebrity boyfriend... In the other... one of the most famous people in the world, writer of some of the greatest songs ever and celebrity vegetarian. But who would come out on top? And just what are Macca's favourite Beatle songs?

Nirvana Kid Recreates 'Nevermind' Cover
It was a random idea that made us all feel very old... and inexplicably became one of Xfm.co.uk's most popular stories of the year. Spencer Elden, the baby that appeared on the cover of the seminal 'Nevermind', hit the age of 17 and decided to recreate that iconic shot. Thankfully, he kept his shorts on this time.

Snow Patrol Take Back The City
It was a busy month for Snow Patrol. In honour of the release of their new album 'A Hundred Million Suns', the band decided to play shows in Belfast, Dublin, Edinburgh and London - and all in 48 hours. Lucky listener Michael Green and his girlfriend blagged a place on the plane thanks to Xfm and reported back to us. Pics and everything.

DECEMBER

Winter Wonderland Went Off!
The dark nights were drawing in, which could only mean it was time to set up shop in London and Manchester for our double headed Winter Wonderland celebration. Kaiser Chiefs, The Rifles, Iglu & Hartly, Ladyhawke, Ida Maria and White Lies blew the roof off Brixton Academy, while Scouting For Girls, The View, The Music, The Automatic, The Subways, Cage The Elephant and Kid British demolished Manchester Academy (not literally, of course).

Blur Reformed!
Yes, Britpoppers all over the country rubbed their eyes and blinked. It was true! The full Blur line-up would be playing Hyde Park next summer. What with that and an Oasis stadium tour for June, it was as if someone was trying to drag the entire planet back to 1995...

Xfm Christmas Party With Keane
Literally a week after the dust settled on Winter Wonderland, we were at it again. A special, competition-winners-only show at 229 in London, featuring Xfm favourites Keane playing just for us. But, as Tom Chaplin said, it was because they loved us just as much as we loved them. Blush...
