Xfm's Review Of 2008 - Part 3

What went on between July and September 2008... Morrissey lost his wires, Coldplay lost touch with their friend Simon Pegg and Elbow didn't lose at all.
JULY
Morrissey Went Wireless
London's top festival-you-can-get-a-bus-home-from, Wireless, took place again in Hyde Park, and Xfm was down there for an afternoon of Moz, Beck, Guillemots, Dirty Pretty Things and The Wombats. Xfm's Steve Harris fulfilled one of his ambitions and interviewed his hero, even showing Steven Patrick his very own Morrissey tattoo. Them was heady days...

Ian Curtis's Headstone Stolen
The late Joy Division singer was the subject of grave-robbing, as tea-leaves took possession of the memorial stone from Macclesfield Crematorium in Cheshire. Despite an appeal from Peter Hook, the original memorial still hasn't been returned and a slightly cheesier replacement was installed. Scum. Subhuman scum.

The iTunes Festival Took Over Koko
It was corporate download time again as the iTunes Festival kicked off in London througout the whole of July. The likes of The Ting Tings, Feeder, Pendulum, Death Cab For Cutie and Paul Weller all played, and Xfm listeners turned up in droves with free tickets.

AUGUST
Coldplay In "Pegg-Gate"
Messrs Martin, Buckland and Berryman took over the reins of Xfm for a month, playing their favourite tunes and generally acting the goat and blow us, weren't they hilarious? The highlights were repeated attempts to call celebrity friend and 'Shaun Of The Dead' star Simon Pegg, who resolutely refused to answer the phone. Clever chap...

R.E.M. Chatted... And Chatted
The long, hot days of August saw Xfm shoving R.E.M's Michael Stipe and Mike Mills into a dark room and pumping them for information about their entire career. Stipey spouted forth about not being keen on touring and how much he was backing Barack Obama for President. It was - ho ho! - 'Reveal'-ing. Arf!

QOTSA @ Reading
The Rock Show's Katie P was armed (with a microphone) and (slightly) dangerous down at Reading this year, managing to catch up with a tired and emotional Josh Homme and Troy Van Leeuwen backstage at the noisiest festival of the year. It was quite, quite random...

SEPTEMBER

Elbow Win The Mercury Music Prize
Sometimes good guys don't finish last. September saw the nation's favourite band (well, in our house anyway) finally triumph as they received the Mercury Music Prize for best album of the last twelve months. And nobody was more surprised than big Guy Garvey and his pals. It was one of the greatest moments of 2008...

Travis Barker Survives Plane Crash
But it wasn't all sunshine and joy in September - Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker narrowly avoided death in a nasty plane crash in South Carolina that saw four people killed. Barker is thankfully on the road to recovery, but is suing the plane and tire company who he blames for the accident.

Noel Gallagher In Onstage Pushing Fracas
In other nasty September news, Noel Gallagher was injured when a punter ran onstage during an Oasis show in Toronto and gave him a hefty shove, leaving the guitarist with cracked ribs after coming into close contact with the monitors. Several dates were cancelled, including the band's show at the Eden Project in Cornwall. Boo!
