Formed in 1978 by Daniel Miller, Mute Records was launched as a means for Miller to release his own material. It soon became the biggest vanity label in the world...
Some early help by Rough Trade saw the fledgling label carve out a niche as a home for synthesised music. Landmark releases by Fad Gadget, Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle followed.
It was Basildon's Depeche Mode that put the label on the commercial map, however. Erasure, former Depeche Mode member Vince Clark's band, followed with staggering global success. Nick Cave's motley collection of Australian post-punks The Birthday Party also found an early home with the label.
Releases from Moby, Goldfrapp, Richard Hawley and Maps have cemented the label's forward thionking reputation. You can hear Mute's story in full below...
