How much are you lot loving The Charlatans' new album, 'You Cross My Path'? Absloutely ruddy loads of you it would seem - since Monday well over 30,000 of you have downloaded it.

In the real world, that kind of unit-shifting power would have secured The Charlatans a Number Two slot in the national charts. And not only that but a further 10,000 individual tracks have been downloaded since the beginning of the week.

A delighted Tim Burgess told Xfm: "I'm absolutely over the moon to think how many people will have heard our music now - it's just amazing! We never dreamt that it would do so well! I think it proves how successful downloading music can be."

The Charlatans manager, erstwhile Xfm DJ Alan McGee, enthused: "What The Charlatans have done now is culturally important."

  2. Always been a fan of The Charlatans, only seen them once supporting the Who but thought they were fantastic. I like this album, puts some other crap in the charts to shame.

  4. what an absolutely ridiculous thing to say. people are downloading it because it's FREE, not because they necessarily want it - and certainly not because they'd have paid money for it. all it achieves is press for the band. tho giving their hard work away for nothing belittles artists, makes the public come to expect free music, which will kill the industry. they must be a very bitter band to do such a thing. (and i'm not a musician, just a member of the public who worries about future upcoming bands and what they're supposed to do when bands are giving their music away for free).

  5. after listening to it, i've realized why it's free. absolute rubbish. i appreciate the fact the charlatans are still releasing albums and it's nice to see a band from the madchester heyday still kicking, but it seems like they only releases albums attuned to the music genre du jour as opposed to 'keeping it real'. my two cents.

  6. Fine return to form for the lads - hope they make it over to the States in the near future. Love listening online to xfm - in the States our radio is pretty much crap (as, perhaps, are our politics).

  7. Astounding stuff from the Charlatans.
"My name is despair" - sounds like an updated Joy Division's "When will it end?"
A brilliant song that encapsulates the zeitgeist of the decade.

  10. The new album is absolutely brilliant! Considering the amount of years they have been going, they are still producing excellent music. There is not one bad track on the album, a staggering feat for any album !
