Stars Have Their Say On NME Awards

With The NME Awards ceremony just hours away, Xfm caught up with the great and the good of the indie nation including The Manics, The Cribs, Johnny Marr and The Enemy.
Chatting to Alex Zane on this morning's Breakfast Show, Nicky Wire from the Manic Street Preachers - who are set to receive the 'Godlike Genius' award tonight - enthused:
"This one does feel like a bit of a crowning glory for us. It feels really special because at the start we were the ultimate NME band. We couldn't play, we didn't sell any records but we got on the cover of the NME!"
With The Tings Tings and The Enemy on Wire's list of favourties he elaborated on some other big contenders:
"I think the Klaxons are full of ideas and are a really interesting band that can only get better and I've got a real soft spot for the Babyshambles album, Pete pulled one out of the bag there. We're the elder statesmen this time which is bizarre"
The Cribs will be taking to the stage with Johnny Marr tonight at the post-awards Big Gig and we caught up with both camps to find out about the collaboration. Cribs' bassist Gary Jarman told us:
"[Marr] He makes it easy, it's the fact that he's Johnny Marr that makes it difficult, but then it's the fact that he's Johnny Marr that makes it really easy, if you know what I mean."
Yeah totally, brilliantly put Gary! Marr is also seemingly chuffed with the partnership, adding:
"I thought The Cribs were one of the best bands I've heard come out of the UK for a long time. Not only do they rock but they've got musical politics as well which I think is really good and not always the case these days with bands."
With the Arctic Monkeys' boys up for a whopping seven awards Tom Clarke of The Enemy - who won the Xfm New Music Award this year - told Xfm of his 'bitter disappointment' as he slates the Monkeys' second album:
"Certain aspects of their music on the second album and certain aspects of their personality and the press come across just as dull. They'll probably win it because they win everything but whether they deserve to win it is another thing."
(Ouch!) Will the Monkeys be making an enemy of Tom Clarke tonight!
Finally we had word from Alan Woodhouse of the NME - who wants throw things at James Blunt tonight (Roger that!) - reflecting on why the NME Awards are so fab:
"Music is meant to be exciting, the whole reason we all work at the NME is because we're absolutely passionate about the bands and I think our awards reflect a lot more about what excites people whereas the Brits dont really."
Don't forget you can get up to the minute news on the winners, exclusive interviews, pics and all the goss from the NME Awards right here on the site and live on air updates with Lliana from 4pm.
