Rolling Stones Blackpool Ban Lifted

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Watts will doubtless be dancing, if not with Mr D, then with joy at the news that Blackpool Council is lifting a 44-year ban that stopped the band from playing there.
The Rolling Stones were banned from the Northern seaside resort after fans rioted at a gig at the Empress Ballroom. Thousands of pounds worth of damage was incurred after crystal chandeliers were smashed, seats were torn and a Steinway grand piano was destroyed. Bricks and bottles were also hurled in the melee.
A bit like a Friday night at Xfm Towers then.
The riot occured on July 24 1964 after guitarist Keith Richards - but of course - kicked a fan in the face for spitting at fellow guitarist, the late Brian Jones.
Council leader Peter Callow said of lifting the ban: "We are writing to the group to say the ban has been lifted and they are welcome to play here again."
Whether the band decide to take up Councillor Callow's generous offer remains to be seen but in the meantime, The Rolling Stones are busy promoting their Martin Scorsese-directed live flick, 'Shine A Light'.
Shot at New York's intimate Beacon Theatre, 'Shine A Light' receives its UK premier in Leicester Sqaure on April 2 and the soundtrack album will be available on April 7 through Universal/Polydor.
