Now The Verve Threaten Strike Action

added 15 January 2008 at 12.28

Following Robbie Williams and Coldplay's lead, The Verve are threatening to withold their comeback album unless they receive assurances from troubled label EMI.

The Verve's manager, Jazz Summers who also represents Snow Patrol, is scheduled to meet new EMI boss Guy Hands this afternoon (January 15) in his capacity as the chair of the UK Managers' Forum.

Summers is seeking assurances from Hands about marketing budgets and the financial state of the beleagured label.

Speaking yesterday (January 14), Summers told The Daily Telegraph:

"Why would we deliver a record when EMI is cutting back on the marketing and is in financial difficulty? I am going to tell Guy Hands I want assurances."

Referring to the notion that EMI wants to cut back on the advances paid to artists, he said:

"[Hands] has got not a clue of what this business is about. You only have big advances because you are not getting any royalties."

Meanwhile, the reformed Verve are set to release their first new album since 1997's 'Urban Hymns' in June (listen to Richard Ashcroft talking about it here). However, Summers has recommended that the band withold the album until they have been assured that EMI can market and distribute it effectively.
