New Songs “Around The Corner” Say R.E.M.

added 06 October 2008 at 10.50

Michael Stipe has hinted that a new album by the Georgia rockers may arrive sooner than expected.

Michael Stipe, in the final part of our R.E.M. documentary, has said that the band have been writing new songs during their 2008 world tour. He also admitted that tourmates Editors and Guillemots had given the singer a few new ideas.

“The greatest inspiration comes from watching other bands and performers… I don’t really steal lyrics, but I mishear them a lot and I’ll take something I thought I heard and turn it into something of my own”.

These ideas, says Stipe, are beginning to form the basis of new R.E.M. songs.

“I’ve been bringing together all my text messages I keep sending myself and the notebooks that I keep on my computer. New songs are right around the corner”.

As for the band’s longevity and success, Stipe was amazed it had continued for as long as it has.

“I never thought I’d be doing this at 48 years old, for fuck’s sake, much less performing in front of 28,000 people in Southampton tonight. It’s still exciting”.
