Mark Chapman: Still In Jail
No parole for "killer nerd" who gunned down the former Beatle.
The man who killed John Lennon has been denied parole again. A New York board concluded Mark Chapman is still dangerous and his request was denied "due to concern for the public safety and welfare".
The 53-year-old been in prison for 27 years for the murder of the former Beatle in New York on December 8, 1980. Despite a clean disciplinary record during his time in Attica State Prison, the parole board claimed that interviews with Chapman revealed that he planned "the premeditated slaying of John Lennon with an essentially clear mind."
"Your conduct thus precipitated a horrendously tragic event which has impacted many individuals," added the board. "Your release at this time would thus not be compatible with the welfare of society at large, and would tend to deprecate the seriousness of the instant offence, and undermine respect for the law."
Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, told the New York Daily News, "It's dangerous for him to come out. Not only for us, but for himself. There are so many people out there who dislike him. It's safer for him to stay in jail."
