Exclusive: Madness - Why We Support Teenage Cancer Trust

added 09 April 2008 at 15.44

Just hours before taking the stage for the first of this year's Teenage Cancer Trust gigs, Suggs and guitarist Chris Foreman told Xfm why taking part in the concerts mean so much to them. Oh, and news of a concept album?

"It's a really good cause," explained Foreman.

He continued: "We've all got teenage children and I met some of the kids [affected by cancer] after and it's really quite grounding. If it was me [suffering from cancer] I'd be really miserable but these are really good kids."

Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) is a charity devoted to improving the lives of teenagers and young adults with cancer. TCT achieves its goals through a number of initiatives, all dependent on private fundraising efforts that range from high profile concerts such as this week's gigs at the Royal Albert Hall and sponsored treks to local community events and personal charitable giving.

Madness' gig last night (April 8) was the first of six high-profile concerts aimed at raising money for the charity. Other artists scheduled to appear include Paul Weller, Muse, The Fratellis, The Who and a night of comedy hosted by The Mighty Boosh's Noel Fielding.

Away from charitable endeavours, the veteran Nutty Boys have been busy with new material though singer Suggs was quick to scotch rumours of a concept album. He said:

"We were talking about doing an album about London and Chris says, 'What do you think all our songs have been about for the past 20 years?'. But we have got a long of songs."

Taking up the theme, Foreman said: "Suggs has been very prolific lately, I must say; he's been writing a lot of lyrics an' that. Most of them are London-based but he's also written a really good one about Las Vegas. What can you do with such a genius?"
