Internet Bosses To Get Tough On Illegal Downloaders

Service providers are joining forces with the Government and the BPI to crack down on filesharers.
There's a new effort to get tough on illegal downloads. The big six internet service providers - Orange, BT, Tiscali, Virgin Media, BSkyB and Carphone Warehouse - are joining forces with the Government to crack illegal file-sharers.
Possible action includes online surveillance - and slowing down the broadband speed of people breaking the law. The BPI's Geoff Taylor said, "ISPs now recognise their responsibility to help deal with illegal filesharing. We look forward to creating the procedures necessary to effectively tackle repeated unlawful filesharing."
In May, Virgin Media kicked off an "education campaign" in May by sending out warning letters to customers suspected of illegal filesharing. "This demonstrated that ISPs and the music business can work together positively," said Taylor. "And, working with government, we have been able to build on that progress and encourage other major ISPs to start taking a responsible approach."
What do you think? Should ISPs be kicking off illegal file-sharers, or should the industry get used to the idea? Tell us what you think - leave us a comment here.

There are far worse things than illegal music on the internet, and there are far more important things for the government to be focusing on, such as knife crime etc.

Is it possible for BT to slow its broadband speed any more? I was in understanding that 'line contention' etc were to blame for slow speeds in my area. Ohh BT you've slipped up, so you CAN slow it down...... *dials BT*
