‘Hallelujah’ Blesses Chart With Three Entries

The X Factor Winner’s version came top, Jeff Buckley’s went in at No. 2, and Leonard Cohen’s original just made the cut at No. 36…

Alexandra Burke became the fourth X Factor champion to top the UK Christmas singles chart, selling almost 600,000 copies in its first week.

Jeff Buckley’s 1994 rendering of Leonard Cohen’s classic ‘Hallelujah’ also entered the chart at No. 2, marking the first time in chart history a cover of the same song ends up in the top two positions.

And so high was the general public’s obsession with the song, Cohen’s original charted at No. 36, celebrating it’s first ever foray into the Top 40.

Burke’s record sales of 576,000-odd copies make her rendition of the song the fastest selling single ever by a female artist.
