Gruff Rhys Backs Up Rotten Incident Claims

The Super Furry/Neon Neon man was present at the ruck that allegedly saw Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke roughed up.

The controversy surrounding that John Lydon/Kele Okereke incident continues. As reported on Xfm earlier this week, reports came through from the Spanish Summercase festival on Sunday night that there had been an incident between the Sex Pistol’s camp and the Bloc Party frontman, which left the latter bruised and with a cut lip. Okereke claims that the “unprovoked attack” was racially-motivated, but Lydon has hit back against claims of racism, telling Kele to “grow up".

Ah, but here comes Gruff Rhys, who was playing the festival with his new project Neon Neon and he reckons that Mr Okereke wasn’t exaggerating. “It was horrific,” Gruff told MTV. “Kele is a very brave man and what he said is exactly what happened. The statements Kele has said are absolutely true. It did happen.”

Meanwhile, a member of another band at the festival commented on DrownedInSound.com that the punch-up was exacerbated by the Spanish security guards: “[They] were total thugs. Our tour manager was put in a headlock after asking the security to let us go as we had a flight to catch to England. I managed to sustain a knee injury at some point which was remarkable given that I barely got involved."
