Exclusive: Franz Ferdinand "Giving Music Away For Free Is Crazy"

Speaking to Xfm for our Independents' Day documentary to be broadcast on John Kennedy's Xposure tonight (July 1), Franz Ferdinand have explained just why they think giving music away for free is "crazy".
Xfm caught up with Franz Ferdinand at their producer's South East London studios where they've been busy putting the finishing touches on their forthcoming album.
Talking about the recent trend of bands giving their music away for free singer Alex Kapranos said:
"This attitude seems to be like 'Yeah, OK we've got all these bands and everyone's getting music for free so maybe we should all our music away as well', and that's just crazy."
Drummer Paul Thomson aded: "We like the music we like and we're perfectly willing to pay for it. Its not just this free thing that just exists."
Turning specifically to Radiohead's landmark 'pay what you like' album pricing system for 'In Rainbows' Kapranos said?: "I think Radiohead are a genuinely progressive band who want to try new ideas and you've got to respect them for that but I don't know how genuinely altruistic that was.
"The £50 boxset was very nice", he laughingly continued, "but you can't download that for free can you?"
With Independents' Day taking place this week Alex Kapranos had some final words of advice for any bands looking to sign:
"Take an honest look at your music and if you know deep inside you're crap then go for a major label - take the money and run! If you know you're actually pretty good then you have to go for an independent because they allow you to make the music you want to make."
You can hear more from Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys and The Kills on The Story Of Domino Records tonight on John Kennedy's Xposure between 10 - 11pm.
