Elbow's 'The Seldom Seen Kid' has been awarded the Nationwide Mercury Music Prize for 2008.
The Manchester band, who have been together 18 years and received a nomination back in 2001 for 'Asleep In The Back', beat off the bookies' favourite Burial for the industry gong, which comes with a £20,000 cheque.

Listen to Guy Garvey's Acceptance Speech: [Part 1] [Part 2]
A clearly emotional Guy Garvey told the crowd at London's Grosvenor House Hotel: "This is quite literally the best thing that's ever happened to us."
He also explained that the album was dedicated to the memory of Manchester singer-songwriter, Bryan Glancey, who died two years ago and was the 'seldom seen kid' in question. "He was the best man that ever lived," said Garvey. "The album is a celebration of his life and his friendship. That very heavy trophy is gonna be sat on Mandy Glancy's mantlepiece, his mum, because she's a particularly amazing lady."
The singer also explained the secret of Elbow's success after so many years in the business. "Respect, love and friendship. And we all get a kick out of sleep deprivation."
