Doherty Desperate To Reform The Libertines

added 01 December 2008 at 11.26

As Doherty meets up with Barat in Paris, the never ending will-they-won’t-they saga rears its head once again…

Pete Doherty is desperately trying to convince Carl Barat to reform The Libertines, so say the tabloids anyway.

The Mirror report that Doherty turned up at one of Dirty Pretty Things’ final shows last week in Paris, and stood by the stage door until his pal finished the gig.

A ‘source’ told: “Carl thinks it might work, but he needs to be 100 per cent sure Pete won't let him down again before he signs up.”

Considering the recently announced demise of Barat’s Dirty Pretty Things is merely weeks away with a final show at Hertfordshire University on December 18, a Libertines-reunion could well be on the cards.

So what do you think? Will we ever see The Libertines reunite? Should we even see it? Or are we better their garage-rock-revitalizing legacy remains left alone? You. Vent. Below.

  1. It would be a fine thing for the Libs to get back together. They've got the songs and I think possibly a maturity level exists now that didn't five years ago. I am afraid of what might happen should they write new material. Its a roll of the dice to be sure but the songwriting was there in the past and I think some collaborations are magic. Doherty/Barat is no exception. I'll come 'cross the pond to check them out!

  2. It's not a question of drugs but how many. Pete is always gonna go for those opiates and Carl wasn't exactly an angel either. They both know the score (exuse the pun). Carl got irate when Pete got so wasted he didn't turn up for gigs, but they both took drugs practically the whole time they were in The Libs, as all the biographies testify.

  3. I really hope they do reunite, what pete and carl had together was special (obviously trying not to negate john and gary) and their performances together were magic. I hope that spark in their friendship lasts forever and they carry on writing great music together forever aswell.

  4. Yeah it is inevitable sooner or later...too much money in it not to.It should be good for at least one reasonable selling album and tour but the chances of them turning music on its head again are slim. How many former libertines fans has Doherty polarised now?

It might be different if either of them had managed similar success with their respective bands but they havent. Now is the moment probably but will it be outrageously successful this time? its doubtful unless they can really write some great new songs. Its like playing their final ace and but can they really affect the mainstream again? who knows?

  6. Peter and Carl are going to reunite one day - sooner rather than later - unless one of them dies first. They love each other too much to keep away - which Carl had done only because he felt that he owed duties to other people to do so. The question should rather be - once reunited, how long will they manage to stay together before the same issues arise? Substance abuse, exclusivity in songwriting and in friendship, musical differences... They spent four years apart, but none of it addressing problems that need to be resolved together. And if it breaks a second (or is that third?) time, who knows whether it will still be fixable?

  7. pete always gets clean and gets back on and then gets clean again...its the way it goes, and im sure carl knows that. as for being "pulled back into the same environement again".(comment below).. babyshambles were more known for drug use than the libs ever were... so i think its more a matter of Carl and Pete getting along and writing good tunes than the drugs coming back into petes life.

  8. I doubt they'll reform. Doherty has been clean, but if he is pulled back into that same environment again, I am not sure how he will cope.

    Fingers crossed.
