Damon Albarn’s Monkey Is Magic

“It’s nice to be told you’re great”, says Blur frontman ahead of ‘Monkey’’s release. Being told you're sh*t is "not so good"

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, creators of ‘Monkey: Journey To The West’ came in for a chat with Jon Hillcock about the album’s forthcoming release. On the inspiration behind the rock opera’s creation, Albarn said:

“A lot of the stuff on this record is me experimenting in the studio, very much in the way I would in the early stages of a Gorillaz record. If you like Gorillaz, there is a chance you might like this”.

Critics were given short shrift by the Blur front-man:

“What is there in caring what people think? I care that what I do is good… It’s nice to be told you’re great, it’s not so nice to be told you’re rubbish, but if you take it too seriously when they say you’re great, you deserve to feel shit when you’re rubbish.”

As for other projects on the Albarn horizon, there’s good news if you’re a fan of The Good, The Bad And The Queen.

“That group of people I’ll always want to work with. That’s the sort of band I play in at the moment”.
