‘Concept Album’ In Offing For Zutons

Dave McCabe claims next record has to be more than ‘twelve songs by The Zutons’ as record company also comes in for criticism.

The Zutons’ next record looks certain to shake up the band’s previous recording conventions. Talking to Dave Berry in Ibiza, singer Dave McCabe and bassist Russell Pritchard were keen to get away from the formula they’ve followed to make their first three records.

The band also claimed that they’d originally wanted to make current record ‘You Can Do Anything’ a far more expansive affair. Instead, they blamed record label Columbia for wanting to play it safe by restricting its length to twelve tracks.

“I don’t want to give anything away but maybe we’ll have a concept on the next album, or a story, rather than twelve songs again by The Zutons”, said Dave. “We wanted to push the boat out but the label wanted to play safe, and the safety net’s not such a great thing”.

Dave hinted that the band’s next move could well be a radical departure.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen. It could be the end or a new beginning. We just need to get the songs together and throw them at the band”.
