Coldplay To Leave EMI?

added 07 January 2008 at 10.46

Following the departures of Radiohead and Paul McCartney, Coldplay are rumoured to be the next big act to leave EMI.

According to tabloid reports, the mulit-million selling quartet could well be departing the beleagured label after they've delivered their fourth album, the provisionally-titled, 'Prospekt'.

Their current five-album-deal with EMI/Parlophone means that the delivery a Greatest Hits album in 2009 is almost inevitable and this would leave Colplay free to seek out new oportunities.

The perennial "source-close-to-the-band" is quoted in the Daily Star as saying:

"There’s so much uncertainty in the record industry right now. The boys don’t necessarily need a label anymore. They aren’t even considering putting pen to paper on any type of new contract until they see what happens.”

EMI were last year rocked by the high profile exits of Sir Paul McCartney and Radiohead. Both acts have recently taken very public swipes at their former label. The one-time Beatle said:

"Everybody at EMI had become part of the furniture. I'd be a couch; Coldplay are an armchair."

Coldplay are said to be planning a major world tour in support of 'Prospekt' which is expected to hit shelves in May or June. Drummer Will Champion has described the new album as "...the start of something fresh."

  1. Bloody hell, the only thing EMI will have left soon is Robbie Williams. Talk about the booby prize!
