Coldplay Gone Ricky Martin?

added 19 March 2008 at 11.50

Coldplay's Chris Martin has confirmed the title of their fourth album as 'Viva La Vida' and no, it's not after Ricky Martin's hip shakin' hit but after a painting by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

The name for the forthcoming album - containing rumoured tracks 'Lovers In Japan' and 'Strawberry Swing' - came about when the band's vocalist saw the phrase, which means 'Long Live Life' on a painting by the acclaimed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

As Chris explained to Rolling Stone, Kahlo died in 1954 after battling back problems and polio:

"She went through a lot of shit, of course and then she started a big painting in her house that said 'Viva la Vida'.  I just loved the boldness of it."

Hitting back at the the obvious likeness to Ricky Martin's pop smash 'La Vida Loca' - in name at least - he added:

"I’ve been through this before, naming something or someone and everyone saying that 'That’s a terrible name', but then saying, 'Well, fuck you, that's what it's called, and I’ll be proved to be right eventually'."

Despite the somewhat dubious naming choice, any of Coldplay's fruits are most warmly welcomed and this one should fall from the tree on June 16.
