‘Horseplay’ blamed for wounds to guitarist after a typically fractious night at the band’s Kentish Town Forum gig. No charges are brought to arrested lead singer Anton Newcombe...

The soap opera occasionally dubbed the Brian Jonestown Massacre took another unexpected twist today with an official statement clearing up the ‘incident’ which took place on Wednesday 16th July at the Kentish Town Forum.

Previous reports had held that guitarist Frankie ‘Teardrop’ Emerson had been stabbed by lead singer Anton Newcombe after breaking a mic at the band’s trophy show in the capital. Retaliating over his guitarist’s wayward, drunken behaviour, it’s been said that Anton Newcombe cut the guitarist with a knife in the dressing room after the guitarist refused to leave the stage.

An official police statement said:

“We were called by London ambulance at 11:09 to reports of a man being stabbed at The Forum club in Highgate Road, Kentish Town. A 35-year-old man (Emerson) was taken to hospital suffering from minor stab injuries. A 40-year-old man (Newcombe) was arrested and later released with no further action because the victim did not want to substantiate any allegation.”

Now, Brian Jonestown Massacre have hit back with an eight point statement to the press, blaming guitarist Emerson’s injuries on ‘glass splinters’ caused by ‘horesplay’ in their changing room..

This is the full statement released by the band:

With regards to the incident that took place on Wednesday night 16th July 2008 at the Forum in London, the facts to the story are:

1. There was no knife or knives involved in any shape or form in this incident
2. The cuts to Frankie Emerson were caused by some glass splinters
3. Frankie Emerson injuries were superficial to his arm & stomach, he was treated at the Royal Free Hospital in London .
4. These injuries were caused by horseplay by the band in their own changing room after the gig.
5. Anton Newcombe was questioned at Kentish Police Station to help the police with their enquiries & was released with no charge or caution .
6. Frankie Emerson did not press any charges on Anton Newcombe.
7. Any comments by anyone within or outside the media to the contrary are completely false .
8. The band will continue with their successful European tour .

So what do you think? Can we take them seriously? Are they for real or just a tragic excuse for a band? Let us know...

  1. Honestly, I love the BJM. They are tragic, but no excuses could explain how good some of their albums are...

  2. "Tragic excuse for a band"

How many albums have you made? They are the only band I know that are keeping things real. Go fuck yourself.

  5. The gig was great - a full two hour set of BJM at their best. Ignore all the crap, the music is enough.
