Barack To The Future: The Rock Stars' Reaction

added 06 November 2008 at 14.53

Just in case you didn't catch the news, earlier this week the United States of America voted in their first black president. He goes by the name of Barack Obama. And music's most outspoken have reacted in their droves...

On tour with Coldplay in Atlanta, Chris Martin found the time to post up a brief message on the band's website, along the lines of: "A great, great, great day. Barack Obama is elected and all feels right with the world. It's pretty amazing to be in America while it's all going on, and we are grateful to be here."

The Strokes bassist Nikolai Fraiture was so (pleasantly) surprised by the news, he got the camera out to film his reaction. He told NME.com, "I watched the election at home with my wife, Regina Spektor, and her cousin. I don't have a TV so we huddled around my computer... We all filmed each other's reactions because it felt like finally having been freed after eight years in prison."

Seattle indie rockers Death Cab For Cutie believe the election is a "revolutionary", and have been much-active in advocating the Democratic candidate. Guitarist and band producer Chris Walla admitted: "I feel safe speaking of Barack Obama as a revolutionary. He's got a brilliant analytical mind; a clear, executive control of speech; a kind, open demeanour; a full and complete grasp on the technologies of the day; a photogenic presence and beautiful family; a gift to inspire and involve everyone around him; the ability to lay the groundwork for plans, both big and small, in obvious, common language; a compassionate ear; and the good fortune to have the cultural winds at his back, and the managerial know-how to capitalize on those winds in unprecedented, brilliant ways."

Brooklyn rapper Jay-Z, who was allegedly asked to stay clear of the president's victory party in Chicago on November 4, could even be invited to Obama's presidential inauguration in January. He too stated: "Martin Luther King walked so Obama could run." Woah. Profound.

And Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz revealed he wouldn't even exist as a human being on planet earth if it wasn't for Obama's right-hand man, Joe Biden. "My parents met working for Biden. He came to their wedding."

And how 'bout you? Do you agree with the Death Cab guitarist that Barack Obama's win is a "revolutionary"? Does it "all feel right with the world"? Vent yourself below.

  2. Revolutionary is pushing it. In the end, he's still a politician that says what he needs to to get elected. The honeymoon will fade a few weeks/months after he's sworn in and everyone will realise that Nancy Pelosi is running the show while Barak is the figurehead.
