X-clusive: Kaiser Chiefs On New Single And Festivals

Following a triumphant night at the Royal Albert Hall headlining one of last week’s gigs for Teenage Cancer Trust, Kaiser Chiefs spoke exclusively to Xfm about their new single and hopes for Glastonbury.
Turning first to news of their new single, due for release on May 21, frontman Ricky Wilson and bassist Simon Rix were keen to explain what their forthcoming release was about.
“Our new single's called ‘Everything Is Average Nowadays’,” Ricky explained, “And it’s a critique on the fact that... well... everything's average nowadays.”
“You were saying the other day,” Simon interjected, “and I thought this was quite good, you know on telly when people used to say the 'F word'? It used to be a big deal, and nowadays its not. The same with the first lesbian kiss on Brookside, it was a massive big deal…”
“...now if a programme doesn’t have a lesbian kiss,” Ricky continued, “On the hour every hour, then its axed. You can get used to anything, and so it doesn’t feel that weird any more.” [listen]
As for live performances from Kaiser Chiefs the band are sharing the O2 Wireless alongside Daft Punk and the White Stripes, and Ricky assured us that this year's event will be bigger and better than ever,
“Wireless is good. It hasn’t been for a while because they’ve had noise restrictions,” he explained, “So the past few years its been disappointing, but we’ve had them noise restrictions lifted, because we’re the Kaiser Chiefs, we do what we like [laughs]. So it will be good this year. Its got a stigma attached to it I think…”
“Don’t be put off by the O2 thing”, Simon continued, “what that means is they give you a free phone on the way in. That’s a fact.” [listen]
And having already let slip a few weeks ago that the Kaiser Chiefs will be one of the acts at this year’s Glastonbury Simon was happy to share his hopes and aspirations for their set at the biggest festival this summer.
“We’re going to enjoy it. I was saying this earlier and Ricky will remember this. It was about 1997 and we watched Blur, and they were headlining at Leeds and they were the last band on and everyone was kind of drifting off into the sunset as they played. And I hope when we play Glastonbury that it will be similar to that. A moment that people remember forever.” [listen]
