X-clusive: Dave Grohl On New Foo Fighters Album, Live Earth & Drinking With Madonna

Xfm spoke exclusively with Foo Fighters frontman and all-round legend Dave Grohl about playing the Live Earth concert at Wembley, his new album and getting pissed on Jägermeister with Madonna.

With the Foo Fighters confirmed to play the UK leg of the Live Earth Global Climate Change Awareness concerts at Wembley Stadium on July 7, Xfm caught up with frontman Dave Grohl to talk about the event.

“I’m really excited about it," he explained, "I’ve never been to Wembley Stadium, I’ve been to the arena a couple of times, but never the big one, and I hear that this is the new one, so I’m kinda looking forward to it, and I’m usually the first person at the party and the last one to leave, so I reckon it’ll be fun.”

“I got a call from our management, and they said that there was a Live Earth event, and it was happening in a few [seven] cities all over the world and we were invited to play, so before we knew of any of the cities or any of the bands playing, we said ‘Of course! We’d love to do it!'

"It’s something that we’re all very interested in, and then when we found out where we were playing, we were even more excited. So yeah, it’s a twofer. Twice as exciting.”

The band will be playing alongside Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bloc Party, Beastie Boys as well as some slightly ‘different’ acts like Madonna, James Blunt and John (Not A) Legend.

“There’s some people on the bill that probably wouldn’t be seem in the same room as us,” Grohl laughs, “but hey man, I’ll party with anybody. You know me. It could be Madonna, if she wants to come do a couple of shots of Jägermeister with her friend Dave she’s more than welcome to come into the room and I’ll pour her some chilli shots of whisky, it’ll be great!”

As for activity in the Foos camp, the band are currently recording the follow up to their 2005 album ‘In Your Honour'.

“Life is great, we’ve been in the studio for the past month and a half, and we’ve got about another month to go,” Grohl explains, “We’ve been recording with out friend Gil Norton [legendary Pixies producer) he worked on our second record, he’s a good guy and he makes amazing albums.

“So we’re making a really big powerful record, which I’m very excited about and I cannot wait to finish. I’m not saying I’m not having fun, I’m saying I can’t wait to jump on stage and do this stuff, its gonna be great.”

“Most bands really get off on moving in different directions, and experiencing as much as they can as musicians, I think as a musician you’re constantly searching for that next high, that song that’ll give you the chills or that song that sounds like a freight train. You’re constantly searching for that, you can find it; you just have to venture in all of these directions to find it.

"So the album that we’re making sounds like a Foo Fighters album, but its definitely moving in a few different directions. Its cool man, I love it.”
