X-clusive: Beastie Boys Ditch Beyonce For Album Title

added 22 May 2007 at 17.42

Beastie Boys speak exclusively to Xfm about ditching Beyonce album title as the inspiration for their new record, Al Gore’s dirty tricks and why they're literally planning to lose their heads.

Speaking exclusively to Xfm, Beastie Boys' Mike Diamond spoke first of the rejected title for their forthcoming album, due out next month.

"I think its gonna be called 'The Mix-Up'", he revealed, "It's a little too sensible almost huh? I was a big fan of the title 'Thick Like Beyonce's Leg' but that didn't make the final cut for some reason. Beyonce's very talented and beautiful and she's probably stronger than we are... We didn't want to have any problems with her."

And as for the sound of the new record Mike D. revealed that despite the fact their won't be any sampling of this album if anyone's a true fan of the Beastie's earlier work they shouldn't find this particular apple falling too far from the tree.

"If you know us, and you know our different albums, the influences will make sense", he continued, "But it's a lot different from our last album, because we play all instruments on the whole album, its not sampled."

"So there's a lot of different styles of music. It might seem kinda out there if you're not that up on what we're doing and have just casually checked out a little bit of this and this, but if you've followed our albums you're gonna be well prepared."

Turning next to their forthcoming Live Earth performance in London's Wembley Stadium next month - which will see them take to the stage alongside Foo Fighters, Madonna and Red Hot Chilli Peppers to name but a few - Mike D. explained how the eco-friendly US Vice president originally got them interested.

"I was actually in a row boat, a row boat race with Al Gore", Mike D. explained,  "I was beating him by the way because I'm a better rows man than him, I row better than he does.

"But  I think that's how he tried to throw me off", he continued, "He was like 'Hey listen I'm thinking of putting together these big concerts' and I slowed down to listen to him, and then he beat me. It was a dirty, dirty trick actually."

And as for what we can expect from their Live Earth performance ay Wembley Stadium on July 7, Mike D revealed that they're prepared to literally lose their heads to make it a special show.

"Actually its a bit of a secret", he confided, "And we're gonna try to do it as environmentally sensitively as we can, but our heads are going to explode, which is a real stadium sized feat. Not until the end of the show obviously as we'll need out heads through the show, but at the end they will explode.

"We've got a couple of days off after and we're hoping that's enough time to heal and to be able to make the next show."
