X-clusive: Maximo Park On New Album

Maximo Park frontman Paul Smith has been speaking exclusively to Xfm about how his band's eagerly anticipated new album and single are shaping up and (dare we say it) a possible release date.
Having stormed the UK charts last year with their debut album ‘A Certain Trigger’ Newcastle's leading man took some time out from recording to talk exclusively to Xfm about how their new record is shaping up.
Paul explained that despite working hard on the album since the beginning of August with infamous producer Gil Norton (Foo Fighters, The Pixies) there's still a little while to go until the new record reaches completion.
“The album’s almost ready, I’m still doing backing vocals," he explained, "I’m the lazy one. We’re sort of mixing as we go along, rather than leaving it to the last minute” [Listen]
But with a great deal of the album already completed, and with the band continuing to storm ahead in their London studios, Paul was keen to tell us what we can expect and how it compares to their 2005 debut
“It’s shaping up to be quite a big record, well, from our point of view anyway. It’s sort of an expansion from what we did the first time. Because we wanted to write more pop songs y’know?
"A desire to write a song that sticks in people’s heads as well as one that delves a little deeper remains our aim for this particular record. But I think you can’t do the same thing over and over again so, well it’s a bit like the other one but more like itself.” [Listen]
As for when hungry Maximo fans can expect to be able to purchase said album, Paul was slightly more uncommital, explaining, “Roughly in the spring of next year. We’ll put a single out in the early new year and see if people like it or not.” [Listen]
Similarly, the band have yet to decide upon a first single, though Paul reckons they're spoilt for choice.
“There are quite a few possibilities. There’s one called ‘Our Velocity’ which we’re very, very happy with. It just depends really. This album has quite a few more reflective ones that hint at the melancholy and romantic, but with the same sort of energy as the first record. It all depends what we feel like coming back with.” [Listen]
