Monday night saw the 2006 Metal Hammer Golden God Awards take place at London’s Koko with American metal rivivalists Trivium dominating the proceedings.

The pint-sized trio, who had just played a stomping set at the weekend’s Download Festival, scooped three awards including Best Live Band and Best Drummer, with lead singer Matt Heafy being crowned 2006’s ‘Golden God

Other big winners included Avenged Sevenfold, who received a Best International Artist gong from Jada Pinkett Smith, accompanied by husband and Hollywood superstar Will Smith. Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach presented fellow rock legend Jeff Cattrall of Alice in Chains with the ‘Riff Lord’ award.

Welsh metallers Bullet For My Valentine headlined the event and also scooped the award for Best Uk Band. Meanwhile Finnish Eurovision winners Lordi, who had earlier received the ‘Spirit of Hammer’ gong, removed their signature masks for the after party, offering fellow revellers a rare glimpse of their faces.

Previous winners included Lost Prophets, Slipknot, My Chemical Romance and Black Sabbath.

The ceremony, now in its fourth year, coincided with heavy rock and metal magazine Metal Hammer’s 20th anniversary.
