X-clusive: The Knife “Rock Is Killing Music”

added 05 July 2005 at 14.11

Olof Dreijer, one half of Swedish duo The Knife, spoke exclusively to Xfm Online about their new single and it’s exclusive remix package, and tell us exactly why garage rock is killing the Swedish music industry.

OK, here are the facts: The Knife are the brother-sister duo of Karin and Olof Dreijer and hail from Stockholm. They claim their music is simply pop, but in actual fact the pair make dark electro-pop, mechanical and subversive in equal measures.  But one thing is certain: Unlike the majority of Sweden’s musical exports, they don’t make is garage rock. No siree.

“Sometimes people mix us up with other stuff from Sweden,” Olof begins, “but we don’t have anything else in common with them. We try to do our own thing. It’s only rock music [coming out of Sweden at the moment] – It’s terrible!

“The rock music is putting a lid on the music industry and killing everything. There’s so much music out there that can’t come forward because of the rock music trends. Bands like The Hives aren’t specifically the problem, it’s the media. It can only focus on one trend at a time and at the moment it’s garage rock. It means electronic music is limited to a small audience.”

With a single ‘Pass This On’ in shops now, one would expect the duo to be out promoting it and playing live and doing all the things normal bands do. Well not quite, but they do have a lovely remix package…

“We’ve only played live once [at the ICA in London in February], and it wasn’t even live,” Olof jokes. “An artist friend of ours made the visuals and that was the focus of the night. Karin sang, but that was the only thing that was live.

“We’ve got a great remix package [for ‘Pass This On’],” he enthuses. “The first is by Dahlback who’s doing the greatest stuff at the moment and it’s a great remix. Very sensitive. The M.A.N.D.Y. mix is more of a dancefloor thing and they’re getting better all the time.”

The single ‘Pass This On’ and the album ‘Deep Cuts’ are out now on Rabid Records through V2, while the amazing video for the 'Pass This On' is well worth checking out over at Xfm's Video Jukebox by clicking here.
