X-clusive: The Cardigans “Wild And Outrageous”

added 20 October 2005 at 15.34

Ahead of the release of their new album ‘Super Extra Gravity’, The Cardigans have been speaking exclusively to Xfm Online about their new album, dog-training and reconciled relationships.

A year on from the below-par ‘Long Gone Before Daylight’ and the band have returned with a single that hints at a return to form, the excellently titled ‘I Need Some Fine Wine & You, You Need To Be Nicer’. Nina and Magnus from the band gave Xfm an insight into their current states of mind…

“This period when you’re just talking about your record and people haven’t heard it is kind of strange,” Nina begins. “You can’t really prove that it exists and you’re just waiting for it to come out so people can know what the buzz is about.”

“Initially I think we just wanted to continue what we did on the last album,” Magnus continues, “But we’ve always been the type of band that likes to try different things and I guess we weren’t feeling too stimulated.

“We wanted to do the opposite and so while the last record was quite sophisticated and laid back, this was going to be more wild and outrageous.”

The band also spoke about the return of producer Tore Johansson to the fold after the blazing rows and punch-ups that saw the parties split in the first place. Or not.

“The fallout wasn’t an argument,” Nina confirms, “It was a mutual agreement. We were working with someone else, and he came back from having worked with other bands, so I think he felt he wanted a bit of revenge to make it work this time, and was excited to be doing the whole band thing again.”

As for the dominatrix-come-dog trainer impression on the band’s comeback single ‘…Fine Wine’, Nina explained that it was born more out of necessity than anything more seedy.

“When we were recording it and practising a song, Peter [Svensson, guitarist] had written this very long intro and I’m not very mathematical with music so I had to count the bars and that ended up on tape.

“But I didn’t want to admit the fact that I had to count so I had to put in some other words there and then the whole dog imagery was fun too,” she continued, adding, “And then it was fun to do that rude talking stuff….”

The Cardigans release the album ‘Super Extra Gravity’ on October 17, while the single ‘I Need Some Fine Wine & You, You Need To Be Nicer’ is out now.
